“Age of Umbra: Sallowlands” – Daggerheart Miniseries Reaches Its Finale

Six episodes, a dark world, and Daggerheart at its more unforgiving: Age of Umbra: Sallowlands reached its finale on August 13, 2026. The Critical Role miniseries presents a style of Daggerheart that moves distinctly away from traditional heroic fantasy—and demonstrates just how differently the tabletop RPG system can be used.

The six-part actual-play series is led by Matthew Mercer, joined at the table by Laura Bailey, Jennifer English, Abubakar Salim, Vico Ortiz, and Zachery Renauldo. Together, they explore the Sallowlands, a new region within the Halcyon Domain, which also served as the setting for the first Age of Umbra series.

For Daggerheart, the series is particularly interesting because Age of Umbra is not simply a traditional fantasy campaign transferred to a different system. Its world is deliberately darker and more dangerous, combining Dark Fantasy and Survival with Daggerheart’s narrative mechanics. Themes of desperation, survival, and hope in the face of overwhelming danger take center stage.

At the same time, Critical Role demonstrates the versatility of the system. While Daggerheart is often associated with hopeful, collaboratively created fantasy, Age of Umbra: Sallowlands shows that the Hope & Fear mechanics can also support stories where resources are scarce, danger is ever-present, and success is anything but guaranteed.
